Domestic Revival

Under the influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement, architects of the 1870s and 1880s rejected classical and foreign styles in favour of a "simple" traditional local style. Leading exponents were Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857 - 1941) and George Devey (1820 - 1886).

The idea was to build houses which did not look like they had been designed by architects, although of course they were. Mediaeval barns rather than Greek temples or Gothic cathedrals were the inspiration. One of their most unwelcome introductions was pebble dashing.
